Gratitude

Oh my goodness! It's been a loooong time since I've even looked at this blog, let alone thought about writing in it. Life has had its ups and downs (the usual thing if you happen to be a human being living on the earth), but mostly it has been just lovely. Ian is still Ian, but we are so blessed and grateful by having the best caregiver on earth---one who really loves Ian as if he were her own son. Her whole family has taken Ian into their home and hearts, and John and I never cease to be amazed at their generosity and love.

One of the wonderful things they do for us is allow us to go on frequent getaways. About four times a year we go to the Smoky Mountains for a week of beauty, restoration and peace. (See above pictures) We stay in a chalet with a spectacular view of the mountains and just REST. We read, eat, take walks, soak in the beauty, watch  movies, cuddle, and just basically refill our empty tanks. None of this would be possible without our lovely caregiver Kandace. That is where we are now as I write this. I am sitting gazing at the beautiful mountains watching hawks make lazy circles as they ride the air currents. My heart expands to almost bursting with love and gratitude.

Ian is now twenty-years old---it's almost time to think about where we will place him when he is done with Special Education. As you can guess, this is an extremely important decision filled with competing emotions. We know we want our bug as close to us as possible, to make the transition as easy for him (and us) as possible, and to make sure he will be with people who love him. We know we will have Kandace to help, and that makes all the difference in the world.

This entry is in honor of our dear Kandace. A simple thank you is not enough. Not nearly. We love you.
